MUSIC CURRICULUM
Trimester 1: The student will perform steady beat on pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments to a variety of recorded music.
Trimester 2: The student will demonstrate knowledge of melodic direction on a xylophone and through movement to various styles of music.
Trimester 3: The student will perform a simple song melody on a xylophone.
Trimester 2: The student will demonstrate knowledge of melodic direction on a xylophone and through movement to various styles of music.
Trimester 3: The student will perform a simple song melody on a xylophone.
Trimester 1: The student will recognize the shape of a melody through movement.
Trimester 2: The student will perform Call and Response.
Trimester 3: The student will play a simple melody in iconic notation on a xylophone.
Trimester 1: The student will identify characteristics of instrument families.
Trimester 2: The student will be able to perform music using Boomwhackers.
Trimester 3: The student will complete an assessment on knowledge of world music.
Trimester 2: The student will be able to perform music using Boomwhackers.

Trimester 1: The student will identify and perform the difference between beat and rhythm.
Trimester 2: The student will identify and perform music from a world culture.
Trimester 3: The student will perform a song on piano.
Trimester 1: The student will complete projects relating to composers.
Trimester 2: The student will perform a song on xylophone using treble clef notation.
Trimester 3: The student will perform a notated melody on the recorder.
Trimester 1: The student will complete an assessment on influential composers.
Trimester 2: The student will complete projects relating to history of Spirituals.
Trimester 3: The student will analyze Spirituals and perform in a concert setting.
GRADING
Music grades are determined based on the following rubric:
SKILL = 4 PROFICIENT: Consistently meets grade-level trimester expectations, demonstrates mastery
and application of concepts and skills, applies independent work habits
3 DEVELOPING: Making progress toward grade-level trimester expectations, demonstrates
understanding of concepts and skills, requires some guidance
2 EMERGING: Beginning to work toward grade-level trimester expectations, demonstrates
beginning understanding of concepts and skills, requires frequent assistance
1 AREA OF CONCERN: Little or no progress toward grade-level trimester expectations,
demonstrates minimal understanding of concepts and skills, has difficulty even with
considerable assistance
PARTICIPATION = 4 Participates and volunteers regularly in music class
3 Participates when asked in music class
2 Participates only in select activities
1 Does not participate regularly in music activities
CONDUCT = 4 Helps others, role model for musicianship and behavior, teamwork, exhibits leadership
3 Ready to learn-pays attention, raises hand and waits to be recognized, follows directions
2 Talking out of turn, negative speech or actions, out of seat without permission
1 Class disruptions, bullying, poor teamwork, leaving class, arguing, fighting
