CARLSON ELEMENTARY MUSIC CLASS
We enjoy moving our bodies to music, singing folksongs and other simple songs from many areas of the world. We can keep a steady beat to multiple styles of music and we are learning how to play cool new musical instruments!
Continuing what we learned in Kindergarten we are able to add instruments to existing music, play musical games, and read/play/compose simple melodies on the xylophone.
We are learning all about instruments and music from all over the world. We can categorize instruments into families of woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion. We are also learning to read music by performing and composing using Boomwhackers!
Our class works with different styles of music through performance, listening, and composing projects. We are focusing on reading rhythmic notation and applying our knowledge to playing various percussion instruments including the piano. We know how dynamics, tempo, rhythm, melody, texture, and form affect music.
We will learn how melodies are made and how to read melodic notation. Our class will be learning how to play the xylophone and recorder this year too!
Our class begins the year considering how the greatest composers in history have used techniques such as dynamics, tempo, rhythm, melody, texture, style, and form while making connections from historical periods to music of today and the other arts. The remainder of the year will be spent in deep analysis and discussions into the importance of Spirituals in American music history. We hope to include some relevant field trips and a spring performance!
